The traditional Korean wedding ceremony is called a Paebeck. The couple are dressed in beautiful, traditional Homboks. It is a colorful and fun ceremony marked by a tea ceremony shared with the parents and family of the couple. This includes a whole lot of bowing so the bride usually needs the help of bridesmaids in her heavy Hombok. It also includes the bride and groom catching dates thrown by the parents in an ornate sheet which symbolizes the number of children that the couple will bring into the family. Next the couple shares a date and the grand finale is when the bride hops on the groom’s back and he carries her around the room ‘piggy-back’ style. Sae and I had a Paebeck at our wedding and it is still one of my favorite parts to look back on.
